Methadone Program
Methadone is one of the most effective medications we have in the fight against the opioid epidemic. For more than 50 years, methadone has been in use as the first-line treatment for opioid addiction (or “opioid use disorder” as it is more formally known).
Methadone is one of the most thoroughly studied treatments in medical history. When prescribed by a knowledgeable team of health professionals, methadone is both safe and effective.
This comprehensive (and free) online booklet published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health answers many of the common questions people have about opioid agonist therapy (OAT) with methadone or buprenorphine (Suboxone) ,Click here :
MAKING THE CHOICE, MAKING IT WORK
Suboxone Program
Suboxone® is the brand name for a tablet that is used to treat individuals who are experiencing problems related to opioids. The tablet is designed to be used sublingually (meaning that the tablet is placed under the tongue and is left there until it dissolves). Suboxone® tablets contain an opioid called “buprenorphine.” Buprenorphine works by activating the opioid receptors in the brain. However, buprenorphine has a number of unique characteristics that make it very different from other opioids, like those listed on page 6. Compared with other opioids, buprenorphine is different in four important ways:
HIGH AFFINITY for the opioid receptor
LOW ACTIVITY at the opioid receptor
SLOW DISSOCIATION from the opioid receptor
CEILING EFFECT at the opioid receptor
